The Academic Resource Center announces the Outstanding Peer Tutor Award annually, to recognize and celebrate the positive impact of exceptional tutoring provided for DKU students.

These highly competitive awards acknowledge and reward an undergraduate peer tutor who has gone above and beyond in assisting students to help them become familiar with academic support and resources, and guide fellow students towards a successful transition.

In choosing the recipients, multiple criteria are considered, including tutoring skills, professional practices, interpersonal/human relations skills, and students’ nominations.

Jincheng He

I am currently a junior student majoring in Data Science. My favorite subjects are computer science and mathematics, and I believe these two can always supplement each other. In my past academic year, I have been a Peer Tutor for the following courses.

  • MATH 205 – Probability and Statistics

  • MATH 202 – Linear Algebra

  • MATH 101 – Calculus

  • COMPSCI 201 – Introduction to Programming and Data Structures

  • COMPSCI 101 – Introduction to Computer Science

One of the key sentences which I think is the most important during this whole process is “learn how to learn”. I really enjoy helping others successfully solve their questions by themselves. It makes me feel so good after helping others know clearly what they were confused about previously.

Outside the classroom, I am a member of the school’s soccer team. I enjoy playing soccer with my teammates, and it would be even better if we can get the champion in the Kunshan League.

Yishui Sun

Hi everyone! My name is Yishui and I’m a junior student majoring in Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences. I have been the Peer Tutor for STATS 101 for more than one year, and I am familiar with fundamental knowledge of statistics as well as programming skills in R, Python, Java, MATLAB, LaTeX and Julia.

I am a big fan of dancing and have served as the manager of DKU Street Dance Club since my freshman year. In my spare time, I love to hang out with my friends, go to parties, and work out at the gym to keep a nice body shape. I am also a keen traveler and enjoy exploring the beauty of nature.

While eating, I prefer to finish one dish before tasting the others because I hate the feeling when two different flavors get mixed.

Qisen (Bart) Guo

I am Qisen (Bart) Guo, a junior student majoring in Molecular Bioscience. Joining the ARC and becoming a Peer Tutor in chemistry is one of the best decisions I have made at DKU. I have improved my “teaching” skills by integrating my feelings about the subject into my explanations. I have also learned some unique strategies for solving chemistry problems from my tutees. In addition, I have realized the importance of respecting others’ thoughts even sometimes those seem ridiculous at first glance.

After a year of taking disciplinary studies courses, I realized the significance of interests while going through the complicated materials in certain subjects. My tip for success is to try to find some amusement in studying and evoke curiosity to explore the unknown world.

In high school, I dreamed of being a historian just like the “masters in Chinese cultures” in the early 1900s. However, considering that my poor handwriting is shameful for a  future “Chinese classic master”, I decided to major in bioscience eventually.
