One-on-one Consultations

Having worked in the U.S. and China, CTL staff members are well versed in pedagogy and technology, college teaching, and multiple disciplinary knowledge. CTL offers consultations to faculty and teaching assistants on pedagogy, educational technology, and educational action research, including how to:

choose the right and effective strategies and tools to enhance student learning
implement active learning activities to engage students in and outside classrooms
improve classroom discussions and team collaboration
identify various ways to assess your students’ learning
and more

Mid-course Check in (SGIF)

Student Small Group Instructional Feedback (SGIF) is a formative mid-course check-in process (NOT evaluation) requested by individual faculty for gathering information from students on their learning experience. It is designed for faculty to foster dialogues with students via CTL’s facilitation, taking about 15 minutes in your class. Please see more details about this program here and sign up here.

Peer Observation of Teaching

Visit a Classroom (VaC) aims to stimulate reflection on teaching and learning, NOT evaluation. A group of 3 to 4 faculty participants across disciplines will visit one another’s classrooms to observe teaching techniques and learning interactions. Faculty would expect to learn from each other and reflect on their own teaching. The goal is to create a respectful, reciprocal, and reflective dialogue on teaching and learning among faculty. Educational Technologies

Supporting innovation in educational technology is the key component of CTL’s mission. We are committed to

exploring, promoting, and evaluating the effective use of educational technologies regardless of the learning modalities (F2F, online, or hybrid)
providing workshops, guides, tutorials, and templates for Duke and DKU supported educational technologies

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Support

CTL leads and facilitates SoTL to produce scholarly work by supporting, conducting, and disseminating teaching and learning research. CTL has produced various scholarly work, e.g. co-presentations with faculty at education research conferences and peer-reviewed teaching journal articles.

The potential scope of SoTL includes:

conducting research on the effectiveness of innovative teaching approaches and technologies
partnering with faculty, staff, and students to develop teaching and learning inquires
collaborating with units across university to identify, analyze and process meaningful data
offering grants, programs, guest speaker talks, workshops, and consultations

Examples are:

- cooperating with the Office of Assessment to offer Teaching and Learning and Assessment grants
- organizing a year-long Faculty Learning Community fellowship
- connecting with Duke faculty via joint projects
