Most of the airports were built in the suburbs away from the city centre, with underdeveloped infrastructure in the peripheries. However, this is all changing.
With more and more aviation-oriented businesses being drawn to airport cities and along transportation corridors, a new urban form is emerging — The Aerotropolis. Cities are now emerging around airports, swiftly connecting suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and business people to distant customers, clients, and marketplaces.
Stretching up to 30km, The Aerotropolis, consists of a dynamic airport city. With outlying corridors, clusters of aviation-linked businesses and associated residential development, this new evolution provides great accessibility to the airport.
The following is an interview with Professor John Kasarda, who is considered to be the Father of Areotropolis.
John D. Kasarda is director of the Center for Air Commerce at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. Dr. Kasarda is also president and CEO of Aerotropolis Business Concepts LLC, President of The Aerotropolis Institute China, and editor-in-chief of Logistics, an international scholarly journal.
