Brownbag Seminar Mini Grant

Brownbag Seminar Mini Grant (Applications are accepted on a rolling basis)

The center invites all faculty affiliates to participate, present or give feedback on a research paper on China studies at any stage of its life course. It can be the draft of a journal article, a book chapter, a conference paper, or even a grant proposal. The CSCC will organize a brownbag seminar, providing lunches for all participants (if in-person) and a modest honorarium for external discussant(s) (up to 3).

1. Do you have a paper you would like to workshop?
If yes, please send a title and a rough idea of when it will be ready to workshop, e.g., mid-September, late October, etcetera. If you have one or more outside discussants you wish to invite, send that information too. With Zoom, that discussant could be anywhere. Please note, discussants are welcome but not necessary.

2. When should we meet?
As not all faculty affiliates are in China, workshops normally meet on Friday mornings or Thursday evenings. If you plan to participate, please send us your availability and preferences in Kunshan time.

All grant proposals should be sent to Chi Zhang, program coordinator for the Center for the Studies of Contemporary China. Please contact Chi Zhang for inquiries as well.

DUKE KUNSHAN UNIVERSITY, FACULTY RESEARCH (ALL ZOOM) WORKSHOPS, FALL 2020
Center for the Study of Contemporary China and Center for the Humanities

(1) If you are workshopping a paper, please send a copy of it to your discussant or discussants and to Chi Zhang a week before the workshop. Also send the Zoom link to your discussant or discussants. At the workshop, assume your colleagues at the workshop have read it. No need to present the paper, although you may say a few words (i.e., under 5 minutes) situating the paper or clarifying what you want most from discussion.

(2) If you are an invited discussant, please start our discussion off, with about 10–15 minutes of comments and questions, focusing on big points. Leave smaller points to share independently with the paper writer.

(3) If you are attending as a DKU colleague, please read the paper and be ready with constructive questions or comments that may be helpful for your colleague to consider as he or she revises the paper.
