Priority Areas and What to Fund:

1. The Major Research Plan on Molecular Functional Visualization in Tumor Evolution and Diagnosis/Treatment aims to develop new insights into the nature of malignant tumors by visualizing the key molecular functions involved in tumor evolution and treatment.
2. The core scientific question of this major research plan is the extraction of information, determination of characteristics, functional visualization of key molecules during tumor evolution, and their significance in diagnosis and treatment.
3. Research funding focus for 2024: according to the overall layout of this major research plan, the following research directions are proposed to be funded as integrated projects in 2024. Applicants are encouraged to adopt interdisciplinary research approaches, with an emphasis on collaboration with fields such as information science, chemistry, and mathematical sciences.
   1. Innovative Visualization Technologies for Key Molecular Functions in the Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment of Early-Stage Malignant Tumors and Clinical Research 早期恶性肿瘤临床诊疗关键分子功能可视化技术创新及临床研究
   2. Smart Diagnosis of Tumor Heterogeneity and Microenvironment Visualization during Malignant Tumor Evolution 恶性肿瘤演进过程中肿瘤异质性和微环境可视化智慧诊断
   3. Intelligent Diagnosis, Treatment Efficacy Evaluation, and Prognosis Prediction through the Integration of Imaging, Pathology, and Multi-Omics in Malignant Tumors 恶性肿瘤影像、病理与多组学融合智能诊断、疗效评估与预后判断
4. Funding plans
   1. In 2024, it is planned to fund 3-4 integrated projects, with a total direct cost of approximately 15 million RMB. The funding period is 2 years, and the research period in the project application should be filled in as ‘January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2026.’
   2. The specific number of funded projects and the amount of funding will be determined based on the applications received and the actual needs of the proposed research work.

Proposal Selection Criteria:

1. Contribution to Achieving the Overall Scientific Objectives.
2. Promotion of New Ideas and Methods for Solving Scientific Problems.
3. Interdisciplinary Integration, Including the Fusion of Multi-Omics, Pathological, and Imaging Information.
4. Promotion of International Cooperation and Sharing to Advance Relevant Fields in China.

Eligibility and Quota Requirements:

1. Experience in undertaking basic research projects or other basic research activities (the applicant should be the PI for at least 1 NSFC research project).
2. Holding a title of associate professor and above or holding a doctoral degree.
3. Please refer to <NSFC 2024 Guidelines> for more details of quota requirements.
4. To fully integrate the strengths of leading research teams in this field and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, the integrated projects under this major research plan should be jointly applied for by 2 or more independent research teams that have already achieved innovative results in the integrated direction. The number of collaborative research units for an integrated project should not exceed 4.
5. Due to the specific nature of medical scientific research subjects, which involve biomedical research on humans and animals, applicants and host institutions should ensure strict adherence to relevant regulations and requirements concerning medical ethics and informed consent for patients during both the application and execution phases of the project.
