National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences is calling for proposals for 2025 National Social Science Fund Annual Project (2025年国家社会科学基金年度项目).

Project Period:

Duration of National Social Science Fund (NSSF) Annual Projects:

  • Basic theoretical research typically requires 3–5 years for completion.
  • Applied countermeasure research generally has a timeframe of 2–3 years.

 

Research Topics:

  1. General Projects should be grounded in the history, theories, methodologies, and applications of their respective disciplines. They should address the needs of economic and social development as well as the realities of disciplinary advancement, reflecting the applicant’s academic expertise.
  2. Key Projects should focus on major priorities of the national development agenda, critical theoretical and practical issues in socioeconomic development, and foundational and cutting-edge questions in philosophy and social sciences.
  3. Young Scholars Projects designed to cultivate emerging academic talent, this initiative empowers young researchers by leveraging their innovative potential to advance knowledge innovation, theoretical breakthroughs, methodological advances, and practical applications.
  4. The proposed research topic must be precisely aligned with the program’s research objectives, demonstrate strong problem orientation and disciplinary relevance, exhibit scientific rigor while maintaining conceptual clarify, and adhere to standardized academic conventions to prevent ambiguity.

Eligibility:

  • Key Projects and General Projects: applicants must hold a senior professional title (Associate Professor or equivalent) or above, or a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent).
  • Young Scholars Projects: male applicants must be no older than 35 years of age (born after April 25, 1990), and female applicants must be no older than 40 years of age (born after April 25, 1985).
  • All research team members listed in the project must obtain their consent and provide a signed confirmation; otherwise, the application will be considered non-compliant.
  • Chinese nationals can serve as the PI of the project, while non-Chinese nationals can only participate as team members.
  • The application scope covers 23 disciplines and 2 research fields under the National Social Science Fund (NSSF). Applicants must complete the 2025 NSSF Annual Project Application Form (see attachment 1) in accordance with the NSSF Project Application Data Code Table (see attachment 2).

 

Quota Requirements:

  • An applicant may submit only one National Social Science Fund annual project application and may not participate as a research team member in other National Social Science Fund annual project applications. Research team members may participate in a maximum of two National Social Science Fund annual project applications. Those who are already members of an ongoing national-level project may participate in at most one National Social Science Fund annual project application.
  • Individuals currently leading a National Social Science Fund project, a National Natural Science Fund project, or any other national-level research project are not eligible to apply for a new National Social Science Fund annual project unless their project has been completed, with the completion certificate dated before April 25, 2025.
  • Applicants for National Natural Science Fund projects, other national-level research projects, or the Ministry of Education’s General Humanities and Social Sciences Research projects can not apply for a National Social Science Fund project in the same year.
  • Research team members of National Natural Science Fund projects or other national-level research projects applying in the same year may not submit a National Social Science Fund project application as a principal investigator if the proposed topic is essentially the same or similar.

 

Application Process:

  1. Apply online through https://xm.npopss-cn.gov.cn.
  2. Applicants must submit three hard copies of the Application Form along with their online submission, ensuring that the content of the online and offline versions of the Application Form is completely consistent. The Project Proposal Detachable Form (课业论证活页) does not need to be submitted in hard copy.
