Rick Wagoner retired as chairman and chief executive officer at General Motors Corporation in August 2009. He joined GM in 1977 in its New York Treasurer’s office, and subsequently held senior positions in Brazil, Canada and Europe. In 1992, he was named executive vice president and chief financial officer of GM. He was subsequently named president of GM North America in 1994 before assuming the roles of president and chief operating officer of GM in 1998, president and chief executive officer in 2000, and then chairman and chief executive officer in 2003.

Mr. Wagoner received a B.A. in economics from Duke in 1975, graduating summa cum laude and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and an MBA from Harvard University in 1977. He was a member of the presidential search committee that selected Richard H. Brodhead as President of Duke University in 2003. A former member of the Duke Board of Trustees since 2001, Mr. Wagoner served as vice chair and then chair from 2008 until 2013. Mr. Wagoner is also a member of the Duke Health System Board of Directors and the Fuqua School of Business Board of Visitors, on which he served as chair from 1997-2001. He currently also serves as co-chair of the Duke Kunshan University Advisory Board, the Duke Chancellor for Health Affairs Search Committee, and the Duke Energy Initiative Task Force.

Wagoner’s current business activities include serving as a director of publicly traded Invesco and Graham Holdings (formerly The Washington Post Company), and privately held Aleris Corporation, Rivian Automotive, and Dematic SARL, where he is chairman. He is on the advisory boards of AEA Investors and Jefferies Investment Banking and Capital Markets Group, and is a senior advisor to Riverwood Capital. He also advises a number of startups and early stage companies. He is a member of the Mayor of Shanghai’s International Business Leaders Advisory Council, and was formerly a member and director of The Business Roundtable and The Business Council. Wagoner was recently appointed to a four-year term on the Virginia Commonwealth University Board of Visitors.

Mr. Wagoner’s wife, Kathy Kaylor Wagoner, is a Duke alumna and member of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association. Their three sons all received their undergraduate degrees from Duke: Trip, class of 2006; Scott, class of 2008; and Matt, class of 2012.
